That has to have the biggest divide of looks front to rear, of any car!

One thing I have to tell Ferrari: change all you want, turbo and hybrid and downsize if you want, but your taillights MUST ALWAYS be circular, no squircle-llelograms.

I would argue that the 360 Challenge Stradale, which is what that car is, is the single best example of a Ferrari tail in modern times.

It has the mesh venting of the F40, but is better formed and finished. It has the red and amber big pie-plate light fixtures, instead of the later beer-can style ones fitted into the tops of F430’s rear fenders, and the body-style is still pure before Ferraris got unfortunately over-styled.

The 360 CS’s tail, and BBS Challenge wheels on a shark-nose F430 would be just about ideal, as I do prefer the F430 over 360 in every other way besides the tail panel and tail lights.

I didn’t say that others were bad...

and I do have a soft-spot for the F348’s behind-a-grille tail lights, like Testarossa...

With an LED refit like that, and perhaps the lenses behind the grilles being tinted to disappear, I think it would look hot... dare I say it, like a McLaren 650S/MP4-12C, with it’s LEDs integrated into the grille spars.

Dare I say it, again... a slightly modded 348 with F355 door vent trims to de-comb the intakes, and BBS Challenge wheels, that would make the car a bit less 80’s-specific, and much more timeless... perhaps even better looking than the F355’s grinning front bumper cover.

The message you are replying to was aimed and at Wheelerguy and descended from his reply, which explicitly said all Ferraris should have round lights; the F355 post was for you. :p

Though since we’re on the subject, I could never de-comb the 348! I love the way it looks just as it is, especially the early ones with the black trim. All I’d do to one is twin-turbo...like that guy in the Smoking Tire review. Beautiful!

The two-pairs of round tail lights are more trade-mark Ferrari, and 360CS is one of the best examples of that.

I like the grille-hidden tail lights of the 348 on the merit of the effect, and how cool it can look, (like the McLarens) not necessarily for it being Ferrari-tradition, so I guess it is a matter of liking both for different reasons.

I really like F355, and 355 Challenge is a cool machine, and in many ways a better car all around than the 348 it replaced... but I kind of like the underdog aspect, and the front and rear styling of the 348, compared to 355. Not that it matters, as it is mostly academic, anyway.

With the tail lights LED-retrofitted, and lens-tinted to disappear behind the rear grillwork when off, plus some better looking wheels (those 355 Challenge Speedlines are gorgeous... and would look spectacular in matte-gold coating that is usually used on magnesium, whether the car would be red, blue, green, or even black)

The combed side intakes are iconic, and I certainly don’t hate them.... but if they were de-combed like the 355, but with the rectangular edge like the 348 minus the combs, instead of the curved edge like 355, I think losing the combs could make the car look non-decade-specific, and just generally good looking, not so specifically 80’s-tastic. Just like I wouldn’t want it to be painted 80s’-tastic cocaine-white.

I think 308/288 GTO/328 cars are timeless. They look fantastic and fast to this day, and they don’t specifically scream 70’s-era design, even though that is the truth, they just look fantastic, regardless. I think a modified 348 could actually be similarly timeless without the strict ties to the 1980s. That doesn’t mean that an un-modified 80’s-specific car is in any way a bad thing.

The mirrors and the multi-piece wheels still are trying to pull it back to the heart of the 1980’s. I do like the black lower trim, though... it trims some of the visual mass away.

And that twin-turbocharged modified 348 on the Smoking Tire was amazing.

Although, I should quit dreaming about modified ferraris, I can’t even afford an SW20 MR2.

NO I don’t. I just want to tell Fezza not to go where almost every other manufacturer has gone.

I mean, at least the R35 still has round taillights.
